How to unpublish a Framer site (and keep a copy first)

Unpublishing takes a Framer site offline without deleting the project. It takes a minute and you can publish again later. The one thing to do first is save a copy, because a site that is no longer published can't be exported.

How to unpublish a Framer site

The Unpublish button is in the project's settings. We couldn't find a Framer help article on it when we checked in October 2026, and Framer moves its settings around from time to time. If yours look different, look for a button labelled Unpublish near the bottom of the project settings.

  • Open the project in Framer.
  • Open its settings. In the editor that is Site Settings. From the dashboard, use the three-dot menu on the project and choose Open Settings.
  • Scroll down to the Danger Zone section.
  • Click Unpublish and confirm.

What unpublishing does, and what it doesn't

Unpublishing is a pause, not a deletion:

  • It takes the site offline. Visitors can no longer load it.
  • It keeps the project. Your pages, content and settings stay in Framer, and you can publish again whenever you like.
  • It isn't the same as cancelling a paid plan. Plans are cancelled in a different place, described below.
  • Search engines will drop the site. Pages that stop loading fall out of search results over time, and links to them break.

Unpublish, cancel or delete?

These are different actions in Framer, and only the first one is easy to undo:

  • Unpublish takes the site offline and keeps the project. Use it for a pause, a rebuild, or a site you have moved elsewhere.
  • Cancel the plan stops the subscription. Framer's instructions are to open workspace settings, go to the Plans tab, open the three-dot menu next to the site and choose Cancel Plan. Framer says the plan's benefits stay active until the end of the current billing cycle.
  • Delete the project is permanent. Framer makes you archive a project before you can delete it, unpublishes its website automatically, and says a deleted project cannot be recovered.
  • Delete the account unpublishes every site connected to it and permanently deletes its projects and workspaces.

Before you unpublish, save a copy

Framer has no HTML export of its own; its help centre says it “does not offer HTML export for self-hosting”. Tools that copy a Framer site, unhost included, work by reading the published site the way a visitor's browser does. Once the site is unpublished there is nothing left to read.

So make the copy while the site is still live:

  • Paste the site's public address on the home page and start an export.
  • Open the free live preview and check it against the live site, page by page.
  • Download the ZIP and keep it somewhere safe. It opens offline and can go back online on any static host.

Moving to another host? Unpublish last

If you are unpublishing because the site is moving, the order matters. Done this way, visitors never see a gap:

  • Export the site while it is live.
  • Deploy the export to the new host. See how to host a Framer site elsewhere.
  • Point your domain at the new host and check every page there. Forms and other features that ran on Framer's servers need reconnecting.
  • Then unpublish the Framer site, and cancel the plan if you no longer need it.

FAQ

Can I publish the site again after unpublishing?

Yes. Unpublishing keeps the project, so you can open it in Framer and publish it again.

Does unpublishing delete my Framer site?

No. It takes the site offline and leaves the project, its pages and its content in your Framer workspace. Deleting a project is a separate, permanent action.

Does unpublishing cancel my Framer subscription?

They are separate actions. Framer cancels a site plan from workspace settings, under the Plans tab, so check there if you want the billing to stop.

Can I export a Framer site after it has been unpublished?

No. An export is made from the published site, so there has to be a live page to read. Publish it again, export it, then unpublish.

Will my site disappear from Google?

Over time, yes. Search engines remove pages that no longer load. If you are moving hosts, put the site up at the same addresses on the new host before you unpublish, so the pages stay in search.
